My name is Steve Atherton. I am a Christian who also happens to be an attorney. On the very day in January 1991 when I came to know the Lord, He moved mightily to instill in me a knowledge of and love for His Word. Consequently, I immediately entered into training to become a minister and have been serving the Lord ever since. My law practice is simply one branch of the ministry the Lord has given to me. Over the years, I have started a church in New Hampshire, taken over an established church in Vermont, trained native ministers to our West African mission, served in various tent revival meetings, ministered in the street, done a wide variety of Christian and secular talk radio and written on a variety of Biblical and legal subjects. I also am married with three children and have run or assisted a variety of small businesses.
When I met Christ, I was already an attorney whose practice had been principally with the high and mighty, at firms in New York City and Washington, D.C. Since meeting Christ and moving to Vermont, my practice has been quite general and often directed to the needs of the lowly and those of modest income. Consequently, I have had to become adept at accomplishing more with less. In so doing, I am reminded of the old saying “necessity is the mother of invention.” In any case, my practice has been extraordinarily diverse, both in terms of the clients I have served and the types of matters I have handled. Throughout the years, significant components of my practice have involved:
Family Law, including divorce, property division, parental rights and responsibilities, child support and domestic abuse
Real Estate, including purchase and sale transactions, land development, contractor disputes and landlord/tenant matters
Business law, including entity formation and operation, contracts, employment matters and a variety of disputes.
Estate Planning, including wills, trusts, medical advance directives, probate court matters and disputes relating thereto.
Church organization and operation, related legal matters and disputes.
I have also represented criminal defendants and handled various Internet, Intellectual Property, Tax and other matters.
